From Myanmar to the World

In three parts, this series tracks the phenomenal spread of Vipassana meditation in our lifetimes

SUPPORT PART 3 OF THE TRILOGY:
FROM MYANMAR TO THE WORLD!

This third film (working title "To the Multitudes") tells of how Sayagyi U Ba Khin’s dream of bringing Vipassana to India and the world was realized. In the 1960s, health and other issues thwarted Sayagyi’s hopes of teaching outside Myanmar, so he delegated the task to Goenkaji. This is the story of how and why Goenkaji introduced Vipassana to people worldwide – business leaders and laborers, high and low caste, political leaders and homeless wanderers, the highly educated and illiterate, government officials and prison inmates, followers of every major religion and of no religion, people of every age and background on every inhabited continent. For this task, Goenkaji would have to draw on all his inner strength, and apply all his skills, knowledge and wisdom. It was the challenge of a lifetime.

From Myanmar to the World – 3 part series

PART 1 - Overland to India (Completed)

This one-hour film follows a few Westerners among the thousands, who traveled the world in the early 1970s, "looking for something." It's the story of those hippies and seekers who discovered India, S.N. Goenka and the priceless gift of Dhamma. It's also the story of a remarkable man who brought Vipassana meditation to the world. And finally, it's a heartfelt tribute to the land and people of India.

PART 2- Caves to Pagodas (Completed)

Long ago, after receiving guidance from the Buddha, meditators would withdraw to meditate in the solitude of a forest or a cave. Fast forward to the 1950s, when Burmese meditation master Sayagyi U Ba Khin was planning his ideal meditation center in Yangon. Inspired by some ancient structures in India, he chose a design featuring concentric rings of meditation “caves,” sheltered under the soaring structure of a golden Burmese zedi, or pagoda. This is the story of how Sayagyi U Ba Khin’s design was re-created first in India by his disciple, S.N. Goenka, and decades later in locations all over the world.

PART 3- To the Multitudes (Current Film Project)

Sayagyi U Ba Khin planned to go abroad and spread the teaching of Vipassana meditation much more widely.  However, he faced obstacles that he could not overcome.  He turned to Goenkaji to carry the mission forward in his place. This is the story of how and why Goenkaji focused on bringing Vipassana to the masses worldwide: to people of all walks of life from Christian nuns, to convicts condemned to life in prison without parole. For this task, Goenkaji would have to draw on all his inner strength, all his skills and knowledge.
